What Is a Koozy? (And Why Smart European Brands Are Putting Chips in Them)
Share
If you grew up in the US, you already know the answer. If you grew up anywhere in Europe, there is a good chance you have never heard the word. A koozy is one of those products that sells millions of units a year across the Atlantic while most Europeans guess it is a phone case or a sock.
It is neither. And once you add a small NFC chip inside, it turns into something no other piece of merch can do.
So, what is a koozy?
A koozy is an insulating sleeve, usually neoprene, that slides over a can or bottle. It does two jobs at once: it keeps the drink cold, and it keeps your hand warm and dry. That is the whole product. Simple, cheap, and weirdly effective.
It goes by more names than almost any product we know. In the US most people search for koozie or coozie, in Australia it is a stubby holder, and plenty of people simply say can cooler. Different words, same thing: a soft, foldable sleeve that lives in a back pocket and comes out at the exact moment someone opens a cold drink. We spell ours with a Y: koozy.

Why Americans buy millions of them
In the US, koozys are everywhere. Weddings, barbecues, beach days, tailgates, company picnics. Businesses hand them out by the thousand because they cost little, get kept for years, and put a logo in someone's hand every time they drink something cold.
Europe never got the memo. Ask around in Barcelona, Berlin or Milan and most people have never owned one. That is not a problem. It is the opportunity. The brand that introduces a useful product to a market gets remembered as the one that brought it.
Add an NFC chip and it stops being a giveaway
Here is where it gets interesting. A plain, branded koozy is a nice freebie. An NFC koozy is a marketing channel.
We embed a small chip inside the sleeve. When someone taps it with a smartphone, any smartphone from the last 10 years, no app needed, it opens whatever you want: your website, your Instagram, a menu, a booking page, a discount code. You can change the link later without reprinting a single unit.
So the same product that keeps a beer cold at a festival also sends that person straight to your shop the next day. The merch does not end when the event does. It keeps working every time the koozy comes out of the drawer.

What businesses actually use them for
- Breweries and beverage brands put a tap-to-reorder link on every sleeve, turning one drink into a repeat purchase.
- Beach clubs and festivals hand them out as the wristband that keeps working: tap for the lineup, the menu, or next summer's early bird tickets.
- Hotels and venues add them to welcome packs, linking to the house menu or the concierge chat.
- Trade show teams swap the paper business card for something people actually keep. Nobody frames a business card. Everybody keeps the koozy.
- Wedding planners personalize them as favors guests take home and use for years.

What does it cost?
Less than you probably think. Custom koozys with your full-color design start from 2.40 euros each at 100 units. Adding the NFC chip is honestly not that much more, and it comes with a simple dashboard where you control what every chip links to.
For context, that is way cheaper than a decent tote bag or a printed t-shirt. Plus, a koozy gets used at the exact moment someone is relaxed, holding a cold drink, and happy. Not a bad time to show them your brand.
Common questions
Is it koozy, koozie or coozie? All three names describe the same product, and all three are searched online. We use koozy with a Y, our own brand spelling.
Do I need an app to read the NFC chip? No. Any modern smartphone reads it with a tap, iPhone and Android alike.
Can the link be changed after printing? Yes. The chip points to a link you control, and you can change the destination anytime from the dashboard without touching the physical koozys.
What is the minimum order? Custom koozys start at 100 units. For NFC orders, get in touch and we will find a quantity that fits your campaign.
Will people in Europe even know what it is? Most will not, at first. That is the point. You are not giving them something they already have three of. You are giving them the thing they will ask you about.
The bottom line
A koozy is the rare promo product that is cheap to make, easy to carry, and used for years. Add NFC and it becomes the only piece of merch that can start a conversation, hold a cold drink, and close a sale in the same afternoon.
Europe does not know what a koozy is yet. The brands that teach their customers first will own the category.
